Before he was tapped to give the keynote address at CPAC, the Fox host’s history was riddled with drugs and mental illness. John Avlon on how Beck became the Pied Piper of the right for the angry and disenfranchised.

The most anticipated speech at CPAC this year isn’t from a presidential candidate courting the support of the far right—it’s from an ideological entertainer whose emergence from obscurity and subsequent impact on politics rivaled the Tea Parties in 2009: Glenn Beck.

Last year, the Saturday night CPAC keynote speech slot was held by Rush Limbaugh—Beck’s Fox show was only one month old. El Rushbo pronounced the speech his first televised address to the nation, and the Obama resistance caught fire as the Tea Party protests began.

Now the torch has been passed to Beck, a man who a decade ago was just starting his post top-40 DJ career with a talk show broadcast on a single station in Tampa. Today, he is the king of all conservative media, with a hit television show, a nationally syndicated radio program, and five books on the best-seller lists. Now the consummate showman is already promoting a new book, The Plan, which he will debut in August with an open-air rally of followers on the Washington Mall. Will his speech offer a glimpse into his “plan” to take America back from President Obama and what Beck has repeatedly called “the cancer of progressivism”?

One thing is certain: The man is crazy like a fox. The best way to get a sense of where Beck might steer the conservative debate in 2010 is to study his past—it’s a story of ambition and addiction, mixing politics and religion. He recycles old fears with apocalyptic urgency, polarizing for profit, making himself the Pied Piper for a new generation of angry, anxiety-ridden, and alienated Americans.

Maddow defends Nye; tells Beck to ‘back off’

Last night, Rachel Maddow defended recent guest Bill Nye “The Science Guy” after recent criticism from Glenn Beck.

The Fox News host took issue with Nye’s saying that people who question climate change because of the blizzard in Washington are “almost unpatriotic” and “denying science.” Maddow, in a segment, ran through what she/Nye/Beck said on this issue over the past few days, before closing with a shot back.

I commend Mr. Beck for his success. I wish his giant audience all the best. He has made a lot of people very afraid about a lot of things. And that tried-and-true strategy has reaped big financial reward for him and for Fox News.

I think it’s between you and your God or you and your conscience as to how much you’re willing to stir up Americans’ fear and prejudice for profit. But it’s between you and me when you accuse me of lying. I didn’t lie. Back off.

Glenn Beck had strong words Tuesday morning on the subject of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban commander who was captured in Karachi, Pakistan.

“The first thing out of my mind? Shoot him in the head,” Beck said on “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning. “Shoot him in the head before it goes into a court and we’re doing all this nonsense back and forth. He’s a bad guy. Shoot him in the head.”

Beck said that his advice would be different if he were running the country.

“If I were in charge, we’d be interrogating him,” he said. “And we’d interrogate him and interrogate him and interrogate him…and then we’d shoot him in the head! But with these people that are currently running our country, they’ll make the troops the bad guys and everything else…shoot him in the head before we all of a sudden release him into, what, primary schools in New York City? What are we gonna do with this guy?”

Glenn Beck: ‘African-American Is A Bogus, PC, Made-Up Term… Not A Race’

The topic of race identification on the upcoming census was brought up on Glenn Beck’s radio program this morning, and controversial statements ensued.

The whole issue apparently merited discussion because three of the available boxes to check in order to identify your race are “Black,” “African-American” and “Negro.”

Beck was quick to clarify:

African-American is a bogus, PC, made-up term. I mean, that’s not a race. Your ancestry is from Africa and now you live in America. Ok, so you were brought over — either your family was brought over through the slave trade or you were born here and your family emigrated here or whatever but that is not a race.

Republicans’ Palin, Tea Party the most disappointing ‘person’ in 2009

Picking the worst or most disappointing people of 2009 is the task that should require sincere thought, deep investigation, and fair judgment over myriad objective data. However, naming the Republican Party as the most disappointing ‘person’ in 2009 posed no reflective issues whatsoever and brings the most distaste as a third generation member of the party.

Republicans continue to work toward no apparent goal except to disrupt, obstruct and demonize anything the new administration proposes. They embrace and employ Fox News to foment hatred and vitriol for issues that Republicans know are lies.

When Sarah Palin lies, she lies as a good Christian Conservative Republican and her statements, buzzwords, and little catch phrases come straight from the party. Instead of calling the lies for what they are, the party embraces her hate-speak and works in concert with Fox News and their Glenn Beck liar-drone to reinforce Palin’s vile mouth.
