Tiger Woods had a separate team handle his trysts, reports Gerald Posner, who reveals how the scandal blew up—and that a payoff to Rachel Uchitel could now total $5 million.

While the world remains focused on Tiger Woods’ Florida estate waiting for the golfer or his wife Elin to emerge the saga’s real drama this weekend played out quietly across the country: Tiger’s representatives have been furiously negotiating a deal with New York party girl Rachel Uchitel and her high-profile Los Angeles lawyer, Gloria Allred, and a person familiar with the details of the negotiations tells The Daily Beast that the payoff could be worth as much as $5 million.

The Uchitel deal, as currently drafted but not yet signed, spreads the payments over several years, insuring that she does not get a lump sum and then turn around and tell her story anyway. It follows the precedent established by Michael Jackson in 1993 when he stretched a $20 million settlement to a boy who claimed to have been molested over 20 annual payments.

This friend, from talks with Uchitel, believes that some of the messages contain expressions of real affection from Woods—perhaps even professing love to her or mentioning that he was considering leaving his wife.

Tiger Woods Taking ‘Indefinite Break From Professional Golf’

In a statement just posted on his website, Tiger Woods announced that he's taking “an indefinite break from professional golf.”

Woods has been dogged by rumors and allegations of infidelity in the days after his car accident in Florida late last month.

Woods acknowledged the infidelity in his statement: “I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children.”

The drama began last month when Woods drove his SUV into a fire hydrant and his neighbor’s tree before being admitted to the hospital. There has been quite a bit of speculation about what role Woods’s; infidelity played in the accident and its aftermath.

The Florida Highway Patrol announced on December 1 that Woods would receive a careless driving citation but would not be charged criminally.

I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What’s most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.

Elin Woods Can Learn from Jenny Sanford

The cheated-upon spouses of the world have a new hero and her name is Jenny Sanford. The wife of the governor of South Carolina, who announced on Dec. 11 that she is filing for divorce, has handled the denouement of her marriage in a way that makes losing a husband to an affair almost look like a shrewd career move.

Perhaps Elin Nordegren Woods, the newest member of the Spurned Sisterhood, could take a few pages from the soon-to-be-ex Mrs. Sanford’s playbook. Nordic silence has its place, but there’s a lot to admire in how Sanford deftly and subtly grasped her part of the narrative and spun it. Hers is not the story of a dull wife who was passed over for an exotic soul mate in Argentina, but rather the tale of the true captain of a family ship, unbowed by the squalls.
